The Softnet Project

Soft Networking in Heterogeneous Environments

Today services for the end user should adapt themselves in new situations. For the instantiation of a service a spontaneous network of the involved components must be built. Therefore all components should offer a location independent and open interface to be integrated into this network.

In the Softnet project several aspects of soft networking are investigated: web-based access to components, service lookup, service description, service and component management, self-organization of networks, software engineering for adhoc networks.

Students that want to participate in this project will learn to develop, evaluate, and improve his/her application with software engineers from industry and university. S/he will be exposed to state of the art web-based architectures and software engineering methods. The student will have the added benefit to practice and improve his/her English skills. The project is a joint effort of Rohde & Schwarz, NTT DoCoMo Euro-Labs, the BMW AG and institutes at the Technische Universität München.

The Virtual City Portal Prototype

Part of the Softnet efforts is the setup of a testbed where set up an environment to evaluate the concepts that have been developed within the project. As a concrete user application we are developing the Virtual City Portal, a distributed application that provides access to information and services of a city for visitors in cars or via mobile phones.
