Also in cooperation with EUROGRAPHICS. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Motivation: In the past two years, Augmented Reality (AR) has received increasing attention, as indicated by two well-attended International Workshops on Augmented Reality (IWAR) and several other related conferences and symposia. By its very nature, AR is a highly inter-disciplinary field involving areas of signal processing, computer vision, graphics, user interfaces, human factors, wearable computing, mobile computing, computer networks, distributed computing, information access, information visualization, and hardware design for new displays. Its concepts are applicable to a wide range of applications. This symposium continues the IWAR series of annual meetings, providing an opportunity for AR researchers from academia and industry to meet in an informal atmosphere for an exchange of ideas, concepts, and research results. ISAR is meant to trigger discussions among participants and to provide an intensive exchange between academia and industry as well as between researchers working in the different AR research branches. Topics: o AR applications + concepts of AR systems for real applications + industrial AR applications + personal AR information systems + medical AR applications + requirements for usable AR o System architecture (software and hardware design) + wearable computing + performance issues (progress and technical shortcuts to achieve real-time AR) + distributed AR o Information presentation + progress in display hardware + real-time rendering of virtual objects + photo-realistic rendering (e.g. reflection analysis) + object overlay and diminishing techniques + aural augmentation o Sensor registration + calibration methods + tracker registration methods + tracking during user motion + tracking of changes in the real world (moving objects) + computer vision methods for registration + acquisition of 3D scene descriptions o Consideration of human factors + user interaction concepts for/with AR (e.g. multi-modal input and output) + human acceptance of AR technology Invited talks: In addition to paper and poster presentations and live system demonstrations, ISAR will have several invited talks on applications of Augmented Reality and on activities in related fields. o Dr. Volker Hartkopf, Carnegie Mellon University "AR applications in architecture and construction: intelligent buildings." o Dr. David Mizell, The Boeing Company "AR applications at Boeing." o Dr. Hideyuki Tamura, MR-Lab "What happens at the boarder of real and virtual worlds - the MR project and other research activities in Japan." o Dr. Russ Taylor, The Johns Hopkins University "AR applications in medicine."
